MarketFront, Market extension in Pike Place, Seattle, US
MarketFront is a building complex that extends Pike Place Market with shops, plazas, and housing overlooking Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. The structure integrates retail spaces on lower levels with residential units and underground parking throughout.
The complex opened in 2017 and reclaimed a site that had remained vacant since a fire in the 1970s damaged the original market building. This development revived a long-dormant part of the Pike Place area.
The building displays public art installations including a large mosaic titled Northwest Microcosm and a metal strip installation called Western Tapestry that residents and visitors encounter daily. These works reflect the creative character of the surrounding market community.
Visitors can walk directly to the adjacent market through pedestrian bridges and explore the shops, restaurants, and open plazas. The layout is easy to navigate with clear sightlines to Puget Sound.
Several independent local businesses operate within the complex, including a working brewery, fish cannery, and chocolate maker that occupy dedicated ground floor spaces. These established operations give the place its own working character distinct from typical waterfront development.
