City School, Alternative high school in Vancouver, Canada
City School is an alternative high school in Vancouver located on three floors within a building that it shares with a preschool, elementary school, and community spaces. The classrooms and facilities sit within this larger educational complex, creating a mixed-age learning environment in a shared setting.
City School was established in 1971 as a pioneer of alternative education in downtown Vancouver. The school emerged from a desire to offer learning approaches different from conventional classroom models.
The school implements teaching methods that accommodate various learning styles while maintaining small class sizes to support individual student development.
Students in grades 10 through 12 can enroll at the start of the school year in September or February after completing an interview. The small student body means that places fill up and early contact with the school is practical.
With around 150 students, the school creates an intimate learning environment where teachers know each student personally. This size allows instructors to adjust teaching to individual needs in ways that larger schools cannot.
