Forestiere Underground Gardens, Underground garden complex in Fresno, United States
This subterranean network consists of multiple tunnels, rooms, and courtyards spanning across 10 acres beneath the California soil at depths of 25 feet.
Between 1906 and 1946, Sicilian immigrant Baldassare Forestiere excavated this underground system using basic hand tools like shovels and picks.
The architecture incorporates Mediterranean elements with open-air skylights supporting the growth of fruit trees and grapevines in an underground environment.
Guided tours operate throughout most of the year, excluding late December through early March and Tuesdays, allowing visitors to explore the underground passages.
The gardens feature an underground fishing pond, a chapel, and numerous fruit-producing trees that have survived for over 90 years beneath the surface.
