Granite Basin Lake, a reservoir located near Prescott, in Yavapai County, North Central Arizona.
Granite Basin Lake is a small reservoir near Prescott in Yavapai County, Arizona, surrounded by Ponderosa Pines and granite rock formations. The water covers approximately five acres with an average depth of around two meters and sits at an elevation of about 1,700 meters (5,600 feet).
The dam was built between 1937 and 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, a Depression-era agency created to generate employment and develop public works. This project helped establish a stable water supply in the mountain region.
The lake is about 15 minutes from Prescott and easily reached via Montezuma Street, Whipple Street, and Iron Springs Road. There are campsites, picnic areas, a boat launch, and several trails for various skill levels.
The climbing routes here are only open from August to February to protect nesting peregrine falcons that use the area between February and July. One famous route called Guillotine Flake requires climbers to ascend through a large rock chimney.
