Hildale, Mountain city in Washington County, Utah, United States
Hildale sits at an elevation of 1539 meters in southwestern Utah near the Arizona border and covers roughly 23 square kilometers of land. The town borders Colorado City in Arizona directly and shares with this neighbor many geographic features of the desert landscape.
The settlement began in 1913 under the name Short Creek Community and became officially incorporated as a separate town only in January 1963. This separation marked the final break with the neighboring community across the state line.
The town took its current name during the split from Colorado City in 1963 and today shows wide streets with modest rows of houses. Visitors often notice the plain architecture and the few public facilities that shape daily life for residents.
Public education is provided through the Washington County School District, which operates several facilities in the area. Travelers should be aware that services are limited and larger shopping options lie in more distant towns.
A severe flash flood struck the community in September 2015 and led to major improvements in infrastructure and emergency systems. These events changed the way residents now handle the risks of the desert region.
