Montrichard, Medieval castle town in Loire Valley, France
Montrichard spreads along the northern bank of the Cher River with a large fortress whose central stone keep now serves as the town museum. The buildings cluster around this fortress and follow the river's shape.
The fortress was built in the early 1000s by Foulques Nerra, Count of Anjou, and served as a strategic point in battles against the Counts of Blois. Later it became an important trading post along the Cher commerce route.
The Church of Nanteuil from the 12th to 15th centuries holds a revered Virgin Mary statue that draws pilgrims regularly. The building shows how faith shaped life in this riverside town.
Markets happen every other Monday afternoon and Friday morning in the town center near the river, where local farmers bring their goods. Most visitors find parking easily here, and the streets are walkable.
The Château de Pont-Cher is built into a cliff face and houses the René Galloux collection of prehistoric and Gallo-Roman artifacts from the Cher valley. This collection reveals how long people have lived in this region.
