Château de Dampierre, French Baroque château in Dampierre-en-Yvelines, France.
Château de Dampierre is a French Baroque castle in Dampierre-en-Yvelines with a symmetrically arranged main building and outbuildings around a paved courtyard. Iron gates mark the entrance to the estate, while formal gardens surround the entire complex.
The castle was built between 1675 and 1683 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart for the Duke of Chevreuse, who was Jean-Baptiste Colbert's son-in-law. Construction took place during the height of French Baroque under King Louis XIV.
The interior gallery displays works by significant artists, including sculptures by Pierre-Charles Simart and an unfinished painting. The space reflects the taste of the family who lived here and used the château as a center for art and culture.
Access to the castle is through guided tours that lead visitors through the interior spaces and surrounding formal gardens. Wear comfortable shoes, as the visit includes both indoor rooms and outdoor areas.
The park was originally designed by André Le Nôtre, the renowned garden architect, and his influence still appears in its structure. The former ornamental beds were converted into hay-mowing fields, giving the grounds a different character than typically preserved Baroque gardens.
