Château de Vaujours, Medieval castle ruins in Château-la-Vallière, France.
Château de Vaujours is a ruined fortress in Château-la-Vallière with stone walls and foundations showing architectural features from the 12th and 15th centuries. The remains reveal how different building sections were once organized and allow visitors to trace the layout of what was a substantial defensive structure.
The fortress was founded around 1250 and withstood English attacks during the Hundred Years War without being conquered. In the 17th century its purpose shifted when it came into the hands of the French royal family.
The castle grounds host European Heritage Days events where visitors participate in educational activities about medieval architecture and regional history.
The site is open to visitors year-round and can be explored independently or with a guide. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and some walls may be unstable in places.
Louis XIV purchased this fortress in 1666 and granted it to Louise de la Vallière, creating the Duchy of La Vallière et de Vaujours.
