Château de la Motte-Sonzay, Renaissance castle in Sonzay, France

Château de la Motte-Sonzay is a Renaissance-era building with a rectangular plan, four corner towers, and a polygonal tower structure that contains a spiral staircase at its center. The layout creates a distinctive shape that reflects 16th-century architectural design.

Antoine de Loubes, the king's pantler, built this structure in 1507 on the foundation of an earlier feudal building from the 12th and 15th centuries. This renewal of an older site shows how Renaissance builders adapted historical locations.

The polygonal tower's doorway shows fine stonework with floral patterns and ornamental details that reflect French Renaissance artistry. Visitors can observe the craftsmanship that shaped this period's architectural identity.

The building sits in a rural area, so plan your visit with plenty of time and explore the surrounding landscape. Access requires advance planning since the site is not open at all times.

Two wings connecting the chapel were demolished in the 1800s, leaving behind an elevated terrace between two 16th-century facades. This transformation tells of later changes that reshaped the original design.
