Grotte de l'Aguzou, Natural cave in Escouloubre, France.
Grotte de l'Aguzou is a cave near Escouloubre featuring approximately 6 kilometers of limestone galleries. Around 1500 meters of passages are accessible to visitors and can be explored under professional guidance.
The cave was first documented in 1893 by M. Gavoy in a scientific publication, which sparked further explorations during the 1920s. These early investigations established the foundation for the guided exploration available to visitors today.
The cave system is explored without artificial lighting, giving visitors a genuine sense of moving through an authentic underground environment. This preservation of natural conditions lets people connect directly with the limestone formations and the quiet intensity of the space below.
Visits require advance booking and are arranged for groups of 2 to 12 people. All necessary equipment including helmets, lights, and protective clothing is provided for your exploration.
The cave is home to a rare insect species called Onychiurus cf. aguzouensis, first scientifically identified in 1978. This endemic creature makes the location important for biological research and adds an unexpected dimension to underground exploration.
