Dolmen des Pierres-Folles, Neolithic dolmen in Commequiers, France.
The Dolmen des Pierres-Folles is a megalithic structure measuring approximately ten meters in length, constructed with sandstone and limestone slabs supported by eleven orthostats that form a burial chamber oriented from northeast to southwest.
This Neolithic monument was built approximately six thousand years ago during the Chalcolithic period and was first documented in 1829 by Charles Massé-Isidore before being classified as a historical monument in 1929.
Local legends tell that the Devil built this stone house and that the Virgin Mary pursued him to the dolmen, leaving the imprint of her foot on the rock during this mythical confrontation between good and evil.
The site is freely accessible to the public despite being located on private property and can be reached by following the Pierres Folles path then La Gîte in Commequiers with postal code 85220.
This dolmen features polishing stones on four of its orthostats and preserves natural engravings called 'Virgin's Step' or 'Devil's Foot' that have fueled local popular beliefs for centuries.
