Château d'Apremont

Château d'Apremont is a Renaissance castle perched on a rocky outcrop that overlooks the Vie Valley below. Two original towers and fortified walls remain from the initial construction, alongside a surrounding park that completes the site.

Philippe Chabot de Brion, childhood friend of King Francis I, commissioned this castle between 1534 and 1542. Its construction marked a transition from medieval fortress design to Renaissance elegance in the Loire region.

The castle displays a permanent exhibition with film screenings and an optical theater installation that brings Renaissance life into focus. You can sense how the residents of that era moved through these spaces and experienced the views across the valley.

Visitors can explore the East Tower, the chapel with exhibitions, and the vaulted passageway, while guided tours provide access to the upper floors. The surrounding park and viewpoints are walkable, though some paths cross rocky terrain.

The castle contains one of only two vaulted horse passages in France, carved directly into the schist rock beneath the structure. This passage allowed mounted riders to enter the fortress without dismounting or leaving the protected interior space.
