Castle of Guillaumes

The Castle of Guillaumes is a medieval fortress perched on a rocky outcrop in the Alpes-Maritimes region. The structure features a square keep and a round tower that form a compact defensive complex.

The fortress began with a square tower erected in the 13th century and underwent expansion phases over subsequent centuries. Later military engineers redesigned sections to adapt the defenses to changing warfare tactics.

The ruins reveal different periods through their architecture and stonework details. Visitors can read the layered construction methods visible in the walls as they walk around the site.

Access to the ruins follows a marked trail starting from the village of Guillaumes at the foot of the slope. The path climbs steeply and requires proper footwear, and visitors should be ready for changing mountain weather.

The fortress changed hands between different principalities and kingdoms throughout its existence. These shifting rulers left traces in the architecture, with building phases from each period still visible in the stonework.
