Mont Mounier

Mont Mounier is a mountain summit in the Maritime Alps reaching 2817 meters, with steep slopes made of limestone and sedimentary rock formations. The peak sits within Mercantour National Park, creating a dramatic landscape of rocky terrain.

An astronomical observatory was built on the peak in 1893 to study celestial objects from this high elevation. This facility made the mountain an important research location for astronomers of that era.

The trail demands solid fitness and typically takes 6 to 9 hours to complete for most hikers. Sturdy footwear and proper mountain gear are essential, particularly because weather can change quickly at this elevation.

On clear days, the summit offers views of the Mediterranean Sea and the island of Corsica stretching across the horizon. Looking northward, visitors can see the higher peaks of the main Alpine range rising further away.
