Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée - Chapelle Saint-Erige, Classified historical monument in the commune of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée, France.
The Saint-Érige chapel in Auron features 13th-century architecture with a wide nave displaying visible timber framing and two unequal apses vaulted in cul-de-four style typical of medieval construction.
Built in the 13th century or first half of the 14th century, the chapel was decorated in 1451 with sumptuous wall paintings attributed to an anonymous Piedmontese artist.
An important pilgrimage center since the Middle Ages, the chapel was renowned for the miraculous healings of Saint Érige, particularly invoked to cure sick children and infants.
Guided tours are organized in July and August every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday afternoon by reservation through the Auron tourist information office for visitors interested in its heritage.
According to local legend, Saint Érige crossed the Tinée river in a single horse leap to escape brigands, landing precisely at the location where the chapel was later built.
