Roche Grande, Mountain summit in Entraunes, France

Roche Grande is a 2,752-metre summit of the Southern Alps in the Alpes-Maritimes, on the commune of Entraunes inside Mercantour National Park. Its broad, roughly triangular upper mass is bare grey and brownish rock with a pointed apex; below it a wide face slopes right, while steep faces and gullies on the lower left and centre hold patches of dark green trees. The right side continues as a gentler slope of scree and sparse vegetation.

Roche Grande lies on the commune of Entraunes in the Alpes-Maritimes. On 4 September 2021 its southern slope became an integral reserve of Mercantour National Park, where no activity or human presence is permitted, so that the natural evolution of the milieu can be observed.

The name Châteauvieux marks the triangular hanging plateau on the ridge linking Roche Grande to a 2,635 m summit. Its northern part, at a spot called Les Cavernes, holds many fissures and crevices where the appeal of the void is felt. Since 4 September 2021 the south face has been an integral reserve closed to all human activity.

Since 4 September 2021 the south face of Roche Grande lies within an integral reserve of Mercantour National Park where no human activity or presence is allowed. Approach and climb only on the authorised northern side, from Entraunes in the high Var valley. The connecting ridge to the 2,635 m point borders the Châteauvieux plateau, whose fissures and cracks near Les Cavernes demand care.

The summit's south face has been a strict integral reserve since 4 September 2021, where no human activity or presence is permitted, so the natural evolution of the mountain environment can be observed. The triangular suspended plateau of Châteauvieux, on the ridge linking Roche Grande to a 2,635 m summit, holds numerous crevices and fissures, especially at Les Cavernes in its northern part.
