Ouvrage La Moutière

Ouvrage La Moutière is a military fortification located at Col de la Moutière in the French Alps. The site consists of multiple armed blocks and an emergency exit block linked by underground tunnels at approximately 2440 meters elevation.

This fortification was built between 1931 and 1935 as part of the Alpine extension of France's Maginot defensive line. It was designed to protect the border in this strategically important mountain region.

The fortress exemplifies French military engineering with its design incorporating machine gun positions and specialized underground facilities for troops.

Visiting this high-altitude installation requires good physical fitness and proper mountain gear. Access via the mountain pass is weather-dependent and often impossible during winter months.

Below the main complex, stone firing positions used by the garrison remain visible in the surrounding landscape. These outer positions reveal the multi-layered defensive strategy that made the site more than just underground tunnels.
