Ouvrage Restefond, Military fortification at Col de la Bonette, France
The fortification contains one artillery block and three observation blocks, connected by underground galleries measuring 668 meters at 64 meters depth.
Construction of the fortress began in 1932 and remained incomplete when Italian forces attacked in June 1940, with Block 6 firing 840 shells during combat.
The structure represents French military engineering expertise, incorporating advanced defensive features such as machine gun cloches and mortar embrasures.
Located at 2,733 meters altitude, the fortress maintains its original military equipment despite current abandonment and restricted accessibility during winter months.
Ouvrage Restefond holds the distinction of being the highest elevation fortification in the entire Maginot Line system.
