Ouvrage Restefond

Ouvrage Restefond is a fortified military complex built into the Col de la Bonette mountainside with multiple combat blocks and observation posts. Underground galleries connecting these blocks stretch approximately 668 meters deep below the surface at around 64 meters.

Construction started in 1932 as part of France's defensive strategy along the Italian border. When Italy attacked in 1940, the fort was still incomplete but its defenders fought back fiercely before the French forces withdrew.

The fort reflects French military thinking from the 1930s, with firing positions and observation points built to protect the border. Visitors walking through the tunnels experience how soldiers were stationed in these cramped underground spaces.

The fort sits at 2,733 meters elevation high in the mountains and is reachable mainly during warmer months when mountain passes are open. The paths through underground chambers are narrow and require decent fitness and careful footing.

This fort sits higher than any other part of the French defense system, offering commanding views across the Alpine landscape. The extreme elevation makes it remote and challenging to reach, which gives exploring the site a genuine sense of adventure.
