Château des Magnans, Early 20th-century castle in Jausiers, France
Château des Magnans is an early 20th-century castle built on a mountainside in Jausiers at about 1,250 meters elevation. The neo-gothic structure faces north to south and overlooks the surrounding area.
Louis Fortoul, a French merchant who founded department stores in Mexico, commissioned architect Bernardo Ramelli to build the castle between 1903 and 1913. The construction took place during a period when the region was modernizing its economy.
Stained glass windows in the interior staircase depict medieval courtly scenes and chivalric traditions. These artworks by Louis Balmet give the castle's inside a distinctive character.
The site operates as a tourist residence with 63 apartments and features a heated indoor pool plus wellness facilities. Summer offers the best conditions for exploring the mountain setting and enjoying the outdoor surroundings.
The name comes from the silk industry that thrived in Jausiers during the 18th century and employed workers until 1863. Few traces of this former manufacturing remain visible in the region today.
