222 Main, Office building in Central City, Salt Lake City, US
222 Main is a contemporary high-rise in downtown Salt Lake City with 22 floors, a glass exterior, and a steel frame structure. The building contains office spaces throughout its upper levels and ground-level retail and dining areas.
Construction took place between 2008 and December 2009, with the architectural firm Skidmore Owings Merrill directing the design. Its completion marked the arrival of contemporary design principles in the city's business district.
The structure shapes the character of Salt Lake City's business district with its contemporary glass facade and creates bright, open surroundings in the downtown core. The extensive windows define how people inside and outside experience the building and the space around it.
Ten elevators connect all 22 levels and provide fast movement throughout the building. Visitors can access the ground-level retail and dining areas directly from the street and find parking hidden behind the main facade.
A glass veil crowns the building's top and shifts colors throughout the year while concealing a parking structure behind it. This colorful element remains visible from many positions across the city and creates a striking contrast to the otherwise neutral facade.
