Crypte Saint-Amadour

The Crypte Saint-Amadour is an underground chapel built into the cliff face of Rocamadour and situated beneath the Notre-Dame sanctuary. The interior displays Romanesque architecture with stone vaults and arches carved directly into the rock.

In 1166, workers discovered a body believed to be Saint Amadour while excavating, which led to building this underground chamber. Following this discovery, the site rapidly became one of the major pilgrimage destinations across Europe.

The crypt contains religious sculptures and decorative carvings that reflect the devotion of those who came to pray here. Today the space continues to draw pilgrims and visitors who seek out this sacred underground chamber.

Access is through a narrow vaulted Romanesque passage, so visitors should wear comfortable shoes and expect confined spaces. The surrounding area remains cool and humid as with most underground chambers, so a light jacket is advisable.

The crypt survived the religious conflicts of the 16th century when local people hid the saint's relics to protect them from attack. This rescue effort preserved one of France's most important religious shrines for future generations.
