Crypte Saint-Amadour, Medieval crypt in Rocamadour, France.

The stone crypt stands within the Notre-Dame sanctuary of Rocamadour, built into the cliff face above the Alzou canyon.

In 1166, workers discovered a preserved body attributed to Saint Amadour while digging a tomb, leading to the creation of this underground chamber.

The crypt became a major European pilgrimage destination after 126 recorded miracles in 1172, attracting King Louis IX and Queen Blanche of Castile in 1244.

Visitors access the crypt through a 12th-century single-nave Roman-style passage divided by two vaulted sections with diagonal arches.

The crypt survived the Religious Wars of 1562 when local residents rescued and concealed saint's relics during the Huguenot attacks.
