Area codes 801 and 385, Telephone area codes in Wasatch Front, United States
Area codes 801 and 385 cover the northern counties of Utah and connect more than two million residents from the greater Salt Lake City metro to communities along the Wasatch Range. The two codes share the same territory and function as an overlay, with both assigned to new telephone lines.
Utah received area code 801 in 1947 when the nationwide numbering system was introduced. Area code 385 was added in 2008 to meet the growing demand for telephone numbers in the region.
The introduction of area code 385 in 2008 reflects the substantial population growth and increased communication needs across the Wasatch Front region.
Callers must always dial ten digits, even for local calls within the same area code. This full dialing requirement has been in place since the overlay area code was introduced across the zone.
The original 801 code now forms a geographic enclave completely surrounded by the newer area codes serving the rest of the state. This arrangement emerged in 1997 during the reorganization of telephone zones across Utah.
