Burgruine Katzenstein, Erl

Burgruine Katzenstein is a medieval fortified settlement near Erl whose original stone foundations remain partially intact. It sits on a forested hillside and displays the basic layout of a former defensive stronghold with enduring wall sections.

The fortress was built between 1392 and 1420 to serve as a border defense against Bavaria. It gained importance following shifts in regional authority that affected the Kufstein area.

The ruins represent the northernmost military outpost of historical Tyrol, highlighting the regional defensive architecture of the 15th century.

The trail to the ruins starts near the Holy Cross Church and climbs steeply through woodland. Sturdy footwear is essential as the path can be slippery and the terrain is demanding.

The site endured repeated assaults during the Thirty Years War without falling to attackers. Old drawings from the 17th century document a wooden palisade system that reinforced the defensive perimeter.
