Burgruine Katzenstein, Erl, Medieval castle ruins in Erl, Austria
The remains of Katzenstein Castle consist of stone walls measuring 10 meters by 10 meters, situated within a dense forest near Erl.
Built between 1392 and 1420, the fortress served as a strategic border defense point against the Duchy of Bavaria-Munich following jurisdiction changes in Kufstein.
The ruins represent the northernmost military outpost of historical Tyrol, highlighting the regional defensive architecture of the 15th century.
The site is accessible via a short but steep forest path starting at the Holy Cross Church, requiring appropriate footwear for the terrain.
The fortress withstood multiple attacks during the Thirty Years War and maintained a protective palisade system visible in sketches from 1623.
