Wildbarren, Mountain summit in Bavaria, Germany

Wildbarren is a mountain summit in the Bavarian Alps located in the Landkreis Rosenheim district. The peak rises to 1,448 meters and offers views across surrounding forested slopes and alpine terrain.

The mountain served as a natural boundary marker in the Bavarian Prealps region throughout the medieval period and beyond. Alpine routes across its slopes were used for centuries by local communities for trade and pastoral activities.

The ruins of Burg Kirnstein lie on the eastern slope of the Wildbarren, above the Inn valley. Hikers on the routes from Kirnstein and Niederaudorf pass the remains of this small castle site, which is one of the few built traces on the mountain.

The trailhead at Wanderparkplatz Bichlersee provides direct access to the mountain with a marked hiking route. The ascent requires moderate fitness and should be planned as a full day outing for most visitors.

During the Würm Ice Age, Wildbarren and the Kranzhorn opposite it formed the Alpentor, the gateway through which the Inn valley glacier flowed. The main rock is Hauptdolomit and Plattenkalk from the Upper Triassic. The ruins of Kirnstein Castle lie on the eastern slope.
