Burg Unter-Falkenstein

Burg Unter-Falkenstein is a castle ruin in Flintsbach am Inn situated at about 536 meters elevation at the foot of Großer Madron. The site still displays defensive walls and a residential tower that show how this fortification was originally constructed.

The castle was built around 1300 following the destruction of its predecessor, Burg Ober-Falkenstein. It then served as a ducal Bavarian court seat for several centuries afterward.

The site shows how medieval nobility lived and organized their daily affairs in this region. Visitors walking through the remains can sense the layout of rooms and understand the structure of a working castle from that period.

Access is via a marked hiking trail from the Peterberg parking area, with the walk taking about 10 minutes uphill. The ground can be slippery, especially after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

Excavations at the site have uncovered medieval artifacts that reveal the wealth and status of the family who ruled from here. These discoveries offer rare insight into the luxury and daily routines of a medieval noble household.
