Petersberg, Mountain summit in Bavaria, Germany.
Petersberg is a limestone mountain in Bavaria, rising to 2,779 feet (847 meters) in the foothills north of the Alps. A hotel complex sits on the summit, overlooking the rolling Upper Bavarian countryside and the Alpine chain to the south.
A building has stood on the Petersberg summit since the late 19th century, gradually expanding into a full hotel over the following decades. In 2010, the site hosted the first Petersberg Climate Dialogue, which brought together environment ministers from around the world.
The Petersberg hosts a conference hotel that welcomes heads of state and government ministers for international meetings. Visitors walking the paths around the hotel can see the kind of setting where high-level diplomacy takes place, surrounded by open Bavarian countryside.
The mountain can be reached on foot from several directions, and sturdy shoes are a good idea regardless of the route you choose. The trails are generally manageable for most walkers, and the summit is open year-round.
Despite being a relatively modest peak, the Petersberg carries more political weight than many taller mountains because the annual Climate Dialogue held here directly feeds into the UN climate summit process. The meeting takes place each spring, just weeks before the main global negotiations begin.
