Saldome

Saldome is a storage facility consisting of two large wooden cupola buildings located in Möhlin, Switzerland. The larger structure measures 120 meters in diameter and 32.5 meters tall and holds supplies of de-icing salt used for winter road maintenance.

The first cupola building was constructed starting in April 2004, with a second structure added between June 2011 and May 2012. These two construction phases reflect a progression in wooden architecture techniques for large-scale facilities.

The wooden cupolas represent a practical solution to a specific storage challenge that showcases local engineering skill. The design shows how construction choices are made based on what the site actually needs.

The complex stores supplies in preparation for winter road conditions and serves an active maintenance function. Access may be restricted since it functions as an operational facility.

Wood was chosen as the primary building material because salt would rapidly corrode concrete and steel structures. This unusual choice demonstrates a creative approach to solving a large-scale industrial storage problem.
