Saldome, Wooden dome storage facility in Möhlin, Switzerland
The Saldome complex consists of two large wooden cupola buildings, with Saldome 2 measuring 120 meters in diameter and 32.5 meters in height.
Construction of the first dome began in April 2004, followed by Saldome 2 between June 2011 and May 2012, marking advances in wooden architecture.
The structures demonstrate Swiss engineering expertise in wooden construction, particularly in solving the challenge of storing corrosive materials without using metal or concrete.
The two domes maintain Switzerland's road safety infrastructure by storing 180,000 metric tons of de-icing salt for winter road maintenance.
The wooden construction method was selected specifically because the salt environment would deteriorate conventional materials like concrete or steel.
