Swissôtel Zürich, hotel in Zürich, Switzerland
Swissôtel Zürich is a tall building in the Oerlikon district that stands out due to its height. It contains over 350 rooms with modern design, restaurants, a top-floor spa with pool and sauna, and various shops in the lobby area.
The building opened in 1972 and was the tallest hotel in Zurich for many years. In February 1988, a serious fire broke out on the 31st floor causing six deaths, which led to renovations and improved safety measures.
The hotel's name connects to Swiss aviation and major Swiss companies. The lobby features playful Swiss touches, such as a large cheese sculpture, that give the space a distinctive local character.
The hotel sits next to Oerlikon train station, making it easy to reach the city center and airport by public transport. The elevator to the top floor spa and pool is a convenient break from exploring the city.
The building was granted heritage protection status in 2013 and held the title of Zurich's tallest hotel for decades. After the pandemic in 2020, the hotel closed and was converted into student housing, an unexpected new purpose for this recognizable landmark.
