Bettmersee, lake in Switzerland
Bettmersee is a small mountain lake in the Swiss region of Valais, located at about 2000 meters elevation beneath the Bettmerhorn. The water is clear and calm, surrounded by meadows and rocks, with an easy circular walking path around it.
The lake was long part of the living spaces of mountain dwellers who used the area for cattle grazing and water collection. The landscape around it was shaped over generations by this traditional alpine use and remains largely unchanged today.
The name Bettmersee refers to the nearby village of Bettmeralp and the surrounding mountains. Locals and visitors use the lake for simple activities like picnics and walks, with usage tied to traditional alpine living patterns.
The lake is only about 10 minutes walk from the village of Bettmeralp, reachable by cable car from Betten. The flat circular path is suitable for strollers and people with limited mobility, with picnic areas and the option to buy drinks at the nearby Bootshüsi building.
The lake is visited mainly in summer months but is also interesting in winter when the water surface freezes thinly. Some travelers come specifically for the completely undeveloped surroundings and the chance to watch fishermen at work.
