Eggishorn, Mountain summit in Valais, Switzerland
Eggishorn is a mountain summit in the Valais Alps, reaching about 2,927 meters (9,603 ft) above sea level. It sits along a ridge connecting several peaks and is flanked by steep slopes on all sides.
The area around Eggishorn became part of a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001, when the Jungfrau-Aletsch region was recognized for its natural value. This was one of the first high alpine areas in the world to receive such recognition.
The mountain stands as a central point for observing Swiss Alpine geology, with its structure consisting of metamorphic coat from the granitic Aarmassif.
A cable car from Fiesch brings visitors to a station near the top, from where a short walk leads to the summit. Sturdy footwear and warm, waterproof layers are a good idea, as the weather at this height can change quickly.
From the top of Eggishorn, the Aletsch Glacier is visible along its full length of around 14 miles (23 km), which is rare among viewpoints in the region. The glacier flows from the snow-covered slopes of the Jungfrau massif all the way down into the lower valleys.
