Eggishorn, Mountain summit in Valais, Switzerland
Eggishorn is a mountain summit in the Valais Alps that rises prominently above the surrounding terrain as part of a ridge system connecting several peaks in the region. The mountain features steep slopes on either side and provides expansive views across the high alpine landscape from its top.
The mountain gained protection in 2001 when the broader Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region received UNESCO World Heritage status for its natural significance. This designation highlighted the geological and landscape value of the surrounding alpine area.
The mountain stands as a central point for observing Swiss Alpine geology, with its structure consisting of metamorphic coat from the granitic Aarmassif.
The most straightforward way to reach the summit is by cable car from Fiesch, which takes visitors to a mid-mountain station in minutes at roughly 2,893 meters elevation. From there, hikers can walk the remaining distance on foot, and while no technical climbing gear is required, sturdy boots and weather-appropriate clothing are essential.
From the summit, visitors gain an unusually wide view that shows multiple famous alpine peaks in a single panorama. What stands out most is the sight of the entire Aletsch Glacier stretching across the landscape below, visible in its full extent from this vantage point.
