Yixian Formation

The Yixian Formation contains alternating layers of basalt, sandstone, and siltstone, forming a complex geological structure spanning 7 kilometers in thickness.

Japanese scientists initiated research on the formation during the 1930s occupation of China's Rehe Province, making initial fossil discoveries in the sedimentary layers.

The formation name derives from the Yixian county where it was first identified, reflecting the Chinese practice of naming geological structures after their discovery locations.

Visitors can examine the formation's exposed sections along the Jinzhou prefecture, where numerous fossil excavation sites remain active throughout the year.

The sediments preserve complete dinosaur specimens with detailed skin impressions, feathers, and internal organs from the early Cretaceous period 129.7 million years ago.
