Liaoning, Province in Northeast China.
Liaoning is an administrative division in the northeast of China that stretches across plains, mountains and the Liaodong Peninsula. The territory includes industrial centers such as Shenyang, Dalian and Anshan as well as coastal sections along the Yellow Sea.
The region was known as Fengtian until 1929, when it received its current name. After several divisions and reunifications, it reached its present form in 1956.
The name comes from the Liao River, which flows through the territory and has shaped its identity for centuries. Today the region is home to people of different backgrounds, with Manchu, Mongol, Korean and Hui communities maintaining their own traditions alongside the Han majority.
Rail connections reach the main places in the region and continue to the ports along the coast. Visitors exploring the area will find both flat land and mountains in the east and west.
Certain areas of the region hold fossil sites with preserved remains of ancient plants, insects and dinosaurs. These locations draw researchers who study early life forms.
