Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, International bridge in Dandong, China and Sinuiju, North Korea.
The Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge is a steel truss rail and road crossing over the Yalu River between Dandong and Sinuiju, connecting two countries across 941 meters. The structure carries separate lanes for vehicles and tracks for trains crossing the border each day.
Japanese engineers constructed the crossing between 1937 and 1943 to facilitate trade and military transport in the region. The Korean War brought bombing raids, but by 1953 the link was restored.
The structure carries a name chosen by China and North Korea after the war to emphasize their relationship. On the Chinese side, the border location draws observers who come to watch the river and the opposite bank.
The border checkpoint is open for trade and travelers holding permits from both governments. From Dandong, one can watch traffic and surroundings on the other side, though passage is regulated.
Trucks and freight trains still roll over tracks laid during Japanese occupation. The crossing takes only minutes, but checks at both ends can last hours.
