Rio Rancho, Suburban city in Sandoval County, New Mexico, United States.
Rio Rancho is a city in New Mexico that spreads across parts of Sandoval County and Bernalillo County within the Albuquerque metropolitan area. The area sits at roughly 5,300 feet (1,610 meters) elevation and borders directly against the larger neighboring city to the south.
The area originally formed part of a land grant established by Spanish settlers in 1710 called the Town of Alameda Grant. After the United States acquired the territory in 1848, the region developed slowly until it was laid out as a planned residential community in the 1960s.
The Intel Corporation facility, established in 1981, transformed Rio Rancho from a residential development into a growing technological and economic center.
Bus connections to Albuquerque run through several ABQ RIDE routes that link different neighborhoods together. Additional transport services are available for older adults and people with limited mobility.
The mountains to the east block moisture from reaching the city, so only about 9 inches (226 millimeters) of rain falls here each year. This dry position shapes the climate and vegetation throughout the entire urban area noticeably.
