Ute Lake State Park, State park with reservoir in Quay County, New Mexico, US
Ute Lake State Park is a New Mexico state park in Quay County built around a large reservoir on the Canadian River. The lake sits at roughly 1,190 meters (3,900 feet) in elevation and stretches across a flat, semi-arid landscape in the eastern part of the state.
The park opened in 1964, shortly after Ute Dam was completed on the Canadian River the previous year. The dam was built entirely with state funds, without any federal contribution, which set it apart from most large water projects of that era.
The park draws anglers and water sports enthusiasts from towns across eastern New Mexico. On weekends, the boat ramps and shoreline spots fill with locals who treat this reservoir as their go-to place for outdoor recreation.
The park is reached by New Mexico State Road 540 and has boat ramps, campsites, and fishing spots along the water. Visitors with boats will find the facilities well set up for launching, while those without can fish or walk along the shore.
Although the surrounding land looks dry and remote, the lake is considered one of the best walleye fishing spots in New Mexico, a fish that is rarely found elsewhere in the state. This reputation brings anglers from far away who make the trip specifically for that catch.
