The wilderness extends across 32,179 acres of granite peaks, alpine lakes, and limestone formations reaching elevations above 13,000 feet.
The United States Congress designated this land as a protected wilderness area in 1993 through the Colorado Wilderness Act.
The territory maintains strict preservation rules that prohibit motorized equipment to ensure natural conditions remain undisturbed for future generations.
Visitors can access 22 miles of maintained trails through multiple entry points, including the Fossil Ridge Trailhead and South Lottis Trailhead.
Marine fossils embedded within the limestone ridge provide evidence of ancient oceanic life that existed in this region millions of years ago.
