Evans–Elbert Ranch, Historic ranch on Upper Bear Creek Road in Clear Creek County, United States

Evans-Elbert Ranch is a mountain property built in 1908 from stone and log materials overlooking the surrounding peaks and valleys. The main structures were designed by architect J. Christopher Jensen and constructed by Jock Spence, with additional buildings added in the following years.

John Evans, a former territorial governor, purchased the land from homesteader John Vance in 1868 and established a ranch operation there. Over the following decades the property evolved into a family retreat and was expanded with additional structures in the early 1900s.

The property served as a gathering place for creative people and scholars who visited the mountains for inspiration and conversation. You can see this cultural role reflected in how the buildings and grounds were designed to welcome guests and foster intellectual exchange.

Access to the property is limited and it is necessary to arrange a visit in advance through proper channels. The remote mountain location and seasonal weather conditions should be considered when planning a trip to see this historic site.

Anne Evans, a family member who took charge of the ranch development, built her own residence on the grounds in 1911. This separate house demonstrates how the property continued to evolve as a personal mountain retreat beyond its original ranching purpose.
