Nederland, Mountain town in Boulder County, United States
Nederland is a town in Boulder County in Colorado, sitting in the mountains at an elevation of around 2500 meters. The center consists of low wooden buildings along the main street, with shops, restaurants and small workshops among pine trees and rock outcrops.
The town emerged in the 1870s as a supply base for silver mines in the surrounding mountains, named after Dutch investors who built an ore processing mill. In the first half of the 20th century, the focus shifted to tungsten ore, which was mined for the arms industry.
Locals gather in the restored old mining quarter, where small shops and cafés occupy wooden buildings from the 19th century. The community organizes the Frozen Dead Guy Days festival every March, a multi-day event with music and offbeat competitions.
The visit combines well with hikes into the Indian Peaks Wilderness or a drive to the Eldora ski area. In winter many roads become icy, and summer afternoons bring frequent thunderstorms, so weatherproof clothing is advisable.
The Carousel of Happiness houses 56 hand-carved wooden animals rotating to the sounds of a 1913 Wurlitzer band organ. A former Vietnam War veteran created the figures over decades to bring joy to children.
