The United States Congress designated this Colorado wilderness area in 1993 as part of a national initiative to safeguard natural landscapes.
The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail crosses through the wilderness, providing opportunities for long-distance hiking along this historic path.
Access to the wilderness requires following US-40 for 9.6 miles from I-70, with parking available at designated areas along Jones Pass Road.
The landscape transitions from high alpine zones to forests of Engelmann spruce, creating distinct ecological zones at different elevations throughout the wilderness.
