Aurora, Urban center in Colorado, United States.
Aurora is a large city in Colorado that extends across three counties between Denver and the eastern prairie. Built-up areas alternate with parks and open land, while main roads run in all directions connecting residential, commercial, and medical districts.
The settlement was founded in 1891 as Fletcher and developed along the railroad line east of Denver. The town council chose the name Aurora in 1907, and the community officially received city status in 1928.
The name comes from the Latin word for dawn, reflecting the hopes of early settlers on the eastern edge of the Front Range. Neighborhoods today show different influences, with Hispanic districts marked by murals and markets, Asian shopping centers, and African community spaces spread across the city.
Most public facilities are located along main roads, and many neighborhoods are easier to reach by car than on foot. A network of walking and cycling paths connects parks and green spaces across the entire area.
Much of the city sits above 5250 feet (1600 meters) in elevation, and visitors sometimes feel the altitude while walking or during physical activity. The air is drier than in many other American cities, and the sun feels stronger than at sea level.
