University of Wyoming, Public university in Laramie, United States.
The University of Wyoming is a public university in Laramie, Wyoming, that spreads across a wide area at an elevation above 2100 meters (7165 feet). The campus includes teaching buildings made of light sandstone, dormitories, sports facilities, museums, and a central green space crossed by footpaths.
The university was established in 1886, four years before Wyoming became a state, and started with a single building for all functions. After the turn of the century it grew gradually and became the only state university in Wyoming with a land-grant history promoting agriculture and mining.
The nickname Cowboys and the logo showing a rider on a bucking horse appear across campus buildings and remind everyone of the regional ranching heritage. The American Heritage Center displays exhibits from the Old West, including saddles, historic photographs, and personal items from pioneers that visitors can view today.
The campus sits on a windy high plain, so visitors should bring warm clothing and sun protection during any season. Parking is available in most areas, and the main buildings are accessible through paved paths that are cleared during winter.
The central green area of the campus is protected by the Wyoming Constitution and cannot be built upon, preserving its historic character as grazing land. This constitutional protection makes it one of the few green spaces in the USA that are legally secured in this way.
