Snow Train Rolling Stock, Railroad equipment collection in Laramie, US
The Snow Train Rolling Stock is a collection of five railroad vehicles at Railroad Heritage Park: a snow plow, locomotive, tender, bunk car, and caboose. They are positioned at the corner of South 1st Street and East Sheridan Street and demonstrate the equipment used for winter rail operations.
The collection dates to when the Union Pacific Railroad developed specialized equipment to maintain its routes through Wyoming's heavy winter storms. The locomotive was built in 1903 and operated snow clearing work in the 1940s, including during the 1949 blizzard.
The preserved equipment shows how railroad workers adapted to Wyoming's harsh winters and the methods they developed to keep trains moving through heavy snow and ice.
The collection stands outdoors in Railroad Heritage Park and can be viewed from outside. It helps to walk around the vehicles from different angles to fully appreciate the construction and functional details.
The snow plow started as a standard tender and was rebuilt in 1953 into a specialized wedge-shaped vehicle. This conversion shows how railroad workers adapted equipment over time to handle increasingly extreme snow clearing challenges.
