Anduiza Hotel, United States historic place

The Anduiza Hotel is an early 20th-century building in Boise that functioned as lodging and a gathering space. It contains a large fronton court inside, approximately 32 meters long and 12 meters high, which was used for playing pelota.

The building was constructed in 1914 by Juan and Juana Anduiza and originally served as lodging for Basque sheepherders spending winter months in Boise. The first pelota game on the fronton court took place on January 29, 1915, marking an important moment for the Basque community.

The hotel served as a gathering place for the Basque community in Boise, offering more than just lodging but a space to maintain their traditions. The fronton court inside allowed residents to play pelota and keep cultural practices alive, creating a connection to their homeland.

The building is located on Grove Street in downtown Boise and is easily accessible on foot. Since it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, changes to its structure are carefully regulated, which means it has retained its original appearance.

The fronton court inside is the only still-active pelota court in Boise and preserves a Basque sport tradition rarely seen elsewhere in the region. This functioning sports facility connects history with living traditions.
