Boise is the capital of Idaho and sits along the Boise River in the southwestern part of the state, with mountain ranges in all directions. The city spreads across several districts with a compact historic center and wide residential neighborhoods between the river and the foothills.
Fort Boise was established in 1863 as a military post during the gold rush in the Boise Basin and grew into a regional trade center. The settlement became the capital of Idaho Territory in 1864 and kept this role after statehood in 1890.
The Basque Block downtown keeps alive the customs of a large Basque community through restaurants, markets and regular festivals. Visitors often encounter dancers in traditional dress and hear Basque music during summer months.
The Greenbelt along the river offers roughly 25 miles (40 km) of paved paths for cycling and walking through the entire city. Visitors can orient themselves at several access points and connect parks, museums and neighborhoods along the way.
