Fort Sherman, Military fort in Coeur d'Alene, US.
Fort Sherman is a military base on the north shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene, with its original buildings situated within a defined area. The remaining structures include a chapel and officers' quarters that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
General William T. Sherman selected the location in 1877, and the installation opened in 1878 first as Camp Coeur d'Alene. The name Fort Sherman was officially adopted later.
The chapel and officers' quarters reflect the military hierarchy as it was organized at the time. These buildings show how soldiers and their families lived together at this remote post.
The chapel is maintained by the Museum of North Idaho and can be used for events and gatherings. Visitors should know that only two original buildings remain standing, and most of the grounds are now occupied by North Idaho College.
The chapel is still used for weddings today and can hold up to 100 guests. This connects the historic structure with modern community occasions on the former military grounds.
