Lake Pend Oreille, Mountain lake in Bonner County, United States.
Lake Pend Oreille is a mountain lake in northern Idaho stretching roughly 43 miles (69 kilometers) in length with about 111 miles (178 kilometers) of shoreline. At its deepest point, the water reaches down to 1,158 feet (353 meters), surrounded by forested slopes and distant mountain ranges.
During World War II, the southern shore served as the site for Farragut Naval Training Station, then the second-largest naval training facility in the United States. After the war ended, the base closed, and portions of the grounds became a state park.
The name comes from French traders who referred to the Kalispel people, an indigenous group who lived along these shores for centuries. Today, local place names and stories recall this early meeting between European fur traders and the communities who fished and hunted here.
Several ramps and marinas around the lake offer access for boats and watercraft, especially in towns like Sandpoint, Bayview, and Hope. Most facilities rent equipment and have fuel docks, so visitors without their own vessel can get out on the water.
The U.S. Navy still operates an acoustic research unit on the shore for testing underwater sonar and submarine technology. This program uses the exceptional depth and quiet of the water for experimental measurements that would not be possible in shallower lakes.
