Swiftcurrent Fire Lookout

Swiftcurrent Fire Lookout is a small cabin built on a stone base positioned high in the mountains of Glacier National Park. From this remote location, the structure commands expansive views across the surrounding backcountry and ridgelines.

This fire watch post was built in 1936 to monitor the forest and detect blazes threatening the mountainous region. It became one of a network of similar stations that helped protect the vast wilderness from fire damage.

The Kootenai Indians previously used this mountain passage for winter travel, naming it 'Pull the Packs Up' before the establishment of the national park.

Reaching this post requires hiking experience and sturdy footwear, as the paths are steep and exposed to mountain conditions. Weather changes quickly at this elevation, so visitors should prepare accordingly before starting out.

Unlike other observation towers in the area, this structure has a roof covered in flagstone and mortar without an outside viewing platform. This design choice makes it one of the rarer construction types among the preserved fire watch stations.
