Many Glacier Hotel

Many Glacier Hotel sits along Swiftcurrent Lake and presents a four-story timber frame structure with broad verandas and a distinctive red roof. Large windows and open corridors frame the surrounding peaks and water directly in front of the entrance.

The building was constructed by the Great Northern Railway and opened on July 4, 1915, as part of a series of lodges promoting tourism in the newly formed national park. Louis W. Hill led the project and sought to draw travelers from the East into the Rocky Mountains.

The hotel received numerous notable guests throughout its history, including John D. Rockefeller, Groucho Marx, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The location provides direct access to several hiking trails ranging from short lakeside walks to full-day climbs into higher elevations. Visitors can often observe wildlife such as moose and mountain goats in the immediate surroundings.

The building was originally planned without heating and intended for use only during summer months. Architects used local timber and stone to complete construction quickly and keep material costs down.
