Louis W. Hill, who helped establish Glacier National Park in 1910, developed the hotel which opened its doors to visitors on July 4, 1915.

The hotel received numerous notable guests throughout its history, including John D. Rockefeller, Groucho Marx, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The hotel's construction marked the Great Northern Railway's first major development project to promote tourism in the newly established national park.
