Elbow Falls, Cascading waterfall in Kananaskis Country, Alberta, Canada
Elbow Falls is a waterfall along the Elbow River in the Alberta mountains where water drops across multiple rock ledges to form a series of cascades. The formation sits in a rocky valley surrounded by steep banks and dense forest.
The waterfall area was dramatically reshaped by severe floods in 2013 that altered the river course and transformed the landscape. After the floods, the valley shifted from a forested space to a predominantly rocky terrain.
The falls area serves as a meeting point for outdoor enthusiasts who gather throughout the year for kayaking, hiking, and nature photography.
Access is via Highway 66 running west of Bragg Creek, and you should have a Kananaskis Conservation Pass on hand. It is wise to explore on foot as the rocks are uneven and the terrain varies.
During dry seasons, the waterfall height increases from 3 to 6 meters as water levels decrease, revealing additional rocky tiers beneath the surface.
