Wort Hotel, Jackson, Wyoming, USA
The Wort Hotel is a hotel in downtown Jackson, Wyoming, built in the Tudor Revival style with brick, half-timbering, and stucco on the outside. Inside, the building holds more than 175 pieces of Western art and a bar whose surfaces are set with silver dollar coins from 1921.
The hotel was opened in 1941 by brothers John and Jess Wort, whose family had been in Jackson since the early 1900s running an outfitting business for tourists and hunters. After a fire damaged the building in 1980, it was rebuilt and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
The Silver Dollar Bar draws both guests and locals who come to sit at the counter and look at the coins set into the surface. The bar has become a meeting spot where the western feel of Jackson is easy to notice.
The hotel stands in the center of Jackson, making it easy to walk to shops, restaurants, and the town square from the front door. Free guided tours of the art collection and the building are available for guests and give a good sense of the place's story.
The silver dollars set into the bar surface were never circulated and all come from the same year, 1921, which makes them an unusually consistent collection to find in a working bar. They were donated by a private individual specifically for this decorative purpose, not collected over time.
